Minky Stapleton is a multi-faceted illustrator with a range of styles, all with a heavy dash of dark humour. A homage to her Afrikaans roots. Originally from Bellville, South Africa, this quirky suburb of Cape Town later became a hotbed of coolness because of bands like Die Antwoord but most definitely wasn’t when Minky lived there.
After studying graphic design in Cape Town, she drove her unreliable Renault 5 to Johannesburg and spent her formative years honing her conceptual skills as an award-winning Art Director and later Creative Director. During this time, she worked in some of South Africa’s best advertising agencies, including the infamous TBWA Hunt Lascaris. After many years in agencies, she gave up the bad pitch food, never ending meetings, late-night shoots and corporate cabs, to follow her first love, illustration.
Since then, she has lived in three countries, had an exhibition called The Power of Negative Thinking, designed all the costumes for a rock opera, created book covers for best-selling authors, done a children’s book about a pirate, designed a T-shirt for Hilary Clinton, created products and done a whole lot of other stuff in between.
Currently, she resides in Auckland New Zealand, where she continues to balance a number of local and international illustration projects with running classes for kids on how to design scary monsters. Her next exhibition is tThe tale of Shrou & Neu in Sydney, Australia.
Please feel free to contact her to talk about your projects. She always ready to dicuss any ideas you might have - no matter how big or small they might be.
